Why Get Married in Helsingør?
Heslingør is another of Denmark’s wonderful towns that is a perfect example of why the Danes are such a happy nation of people.
It’s a beautiful coastal town with a long and proud maritime history. It boasts stunning and quaint Danish streets and offers vibrant and hugely popular cultural and historical attractions, the Helsingør Castle, Kronborg Slot, being one of them.
Helsingør is located to the north of Copenhagen, only a 40 minute drive or 55 minute train ride from the capital making it extremely conveniently located for those couples flying into Copenhagen’s Kastrup airport.

Witnesses are provided by the town hall free of charge on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If you choose to get married on a Saturday, you must bring witnesses with you.
The marriage office’s official response time is approximately 2 weeks, however, it can be longer than this before they respond to date requests. There have been times where it has taken between 3 and 4 weeks to get a response! There must therefore be at least 3 weeks between the date you submit your request and the prospective wedding date. This makes Helsingør the perfect choice for couples who are not in a rush!
You can present your documents 10 minutes before the ceremony starts at the town hall.

The Helsingør town hall is a gorgeous building and weddings are conducted in a stunning room with huge stained glass windows and beautiful chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

It is a beautiful room in which to get married and one that the town hall is very proud of.
To add to this the city of Helsingør is incredibly vibrant. It considers itself as the cultural capital of north Zealand and has been a thriving place since its creation back in the 1400s.
It is also incredibly close to Sweden, you can even catch a ferry over from Helsingør, which would take just under 45 minutes!
How To Get to Helsingør
Getting to Helsingør is very straightforward. You can reach the city in around 55 minutes on a train from Copenhagen.
Alternatively you can drive. From Copenhagen this would take around 45 minutes.

1. Kronborg Slot (Kronborg Castle) 📍
Kronborg Slot is also known as ‘Hamlet’s Castle’. The reason for this is quite simply that this is the castle Shakespeare set the play of Hamlet!
It is an integral part of Danish history, and this beautiful castle guarded the Øresund Sound. Such an important location in fact, it is now a UNESCO world Heritage Site! Definitely worth checking out while visiting Helsingør!
2. St Olaf’s Church 📍
St Olaf’s church (technically a cathedral) is a well loved tourist attraction located in Helsingør. The church is incredibly old, dating back to around the 1200s and is decorated beautifully inside, history oozing from every corner. If you have time while you’re in Helsingør, go check it out! 🙂
3. The Maritime Museum 📍
With over 2700 Google reviews, this is a very popular place to visit in Helsingør. The Danish are incredibly proud of their maritime history, and as Denmark is made up of a whopping 1419 islands, it’s no wonder!
