Bornholm, also known as ‘Denmark’s Sunshine Island’, might not initially seem like the first obvious choice for couples who are looking for a quick elopement to Denmark.
Getting to Bornholm takes ONLY 40 minutes from Copenhagen by plane, even though when you look at a map the island seems quite far from the mainland.
This is a treasured jewel in Denmark’s island crown and as you see, isn’t actually as far from the mainland as you might initially think!

Why Get Married on Bornholm?
The Danes absolutely LOVE it here.
Most have visited Bornholm at some point in their lives which is why it holds such a special place in the hearts of all Denmark’s citizens.
It is beautiful and incredibly popular – as a result it is particularly well set up for tourists.
In fact, it’s set up beautifully for international couples and their guests, and you really will make memories to last a lifetime during your time here. 😀 🇩🇰
Weddings are held at Rønne town hall on Bornholm on the following days:
Thursday
Friday
Saturday (selected Saturdays only).
Witnesses are provided on Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturdays you MUST provide your own.
Ideally, the town hall prefers the date request to be sent to them 1 month before the prospective wedding date, but they are flexible if couples have less time.
However, the town hall MUST receive your approval / date request no later than 14 days before the date you are requesting for your wedding.
You need to present your documents to the staff at the town hall just before your ceremony starts. It is advisable, in this case, to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your ceremony start time.
The Look and Feel of Getting Married in Bornholm
The town hall in Rønne is a typical modern Danish building, located on this very beautiful island. Modern doesn’t mean lacking in romance, and the registrars here will ensure that you have a relaxed yet intimate experience, after which you have the whole island to explore and celebrate as you wish. It is not a place that disappoints and you will make memories here to last a lifetime.

Getting to Bornholm
- The flight from Copenhagen to the island takes ONLY 40 minutes (did you know it takes longer than that to get the train from Copenhagen to Stevns municipality?)
- The flights are direct from Copenhagen
- The airport on Bornholm is located in Rønne, which is incidentally the same town where the town hall is located!
- It’s only a 6 minute drive from the airport to the town hall in Rønne. Convenient or what?! 🙂
- It is possible to catch a ferry to Bornholm too. The quickest way of doing this is to drive over the bridge to Sweden and catch a ferry from Ysted – the ferry from here takes only 80 minutes (the drive inclusive of the ferry will take you approx. 4 hours (give or take traffic and time of day depending).
- If you’re coming from Germany, it’s possible to get the ferry directly from Sassnitz – this journey would only take you 3 hours, 20 minutes.
- There is a ferry booking website which details all ferry travel to the island. This is very useful when planning your journey and very important for those couples who don’t want to fly.

5 Things to do on Bornholm
Well, it would be rude not to! The town hall where you will be getting married is located in this beautiful old town (the island’s oldest market town, in fact) and there is much to see and do here. From simply walking through its old cobbled streets soaking up the pace of life and quaintness, to partaking in a pottery class (very popular in Rønne), visiting St Nicolas’ church to dining at one of the many lovely restaurants in this gorgeous town.
This church attracts around 120,000 visitors per year!! It’s an incredibly popular tourist destination and while it is not the only round church on the island, it is the largest and the oldest. Legend has it that this church is linked to the Knights Templar, which is very cool indeed, although this theory has never been proved. Definitely worth a visit if you’re visiting this island and soaking up some of the history!
The Opal Lake area of Bornholm is so unique to Denmark because, for the most part, the Danish landscape is so flat. The Opal Lake is an old granite quarry and there are multiple hiking routes you can take. You can also swim in the lake, though do take care, it’s very very deep.
It’s said that this is the town of Bornholm that is an absolute must see. The beautiful streets of this quaint market town hold many gems to be experienced; be that amazing restaurants, smokehouses, sandy beaches and so much art. If you decide to get married on Bornholm then visiting Svaneke is a must.
Ok, so technically the Ertholmene Islands are not on Bornholm but taking a boat ride (around an hour) to these beautiful islands, will not disappoint. There are no cars, or dogs, allowed on the islands and it’s pretty rare to find somewhere these days where cars are not allowed. It’s a very special place and definitely worth taking a trip here if you have the time.
