Why Get Married in Aabenraa?

Where do we begin?! Aabenraa is a gorgeous harbour town, located at the edge of the Aabenraa fjord. Its quaint streets yet buzzy atmosphere makes it a great location to visit and to get married.

There is plenty to see and do and you really get a sense here of exactly why the Danes are such a happy nation of people.

It is located just a 25 minute drive from the German border, making it an excellent choice for those couples who are hoping to drive up to Denmark from Germany.

Mondays: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Tuesdays: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Wednesdays:  9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Thursdays: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Friday: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Aabenraa town hall does sometimes change the times and days that they can hold weddings at short notice – this can be due to how quiet or busy they are or staff availability.

The marriage office will be closed on public holidays.

Should you require them, witnesses are provided by the town hall on Mondays – Thursdays in the morning between 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, at no extra cost.

For weddings after 12:00 pm on these days you must bring your own witnesses.

The town hall can NOT provide witnesses on Fridays.

Aabenraa has a same day response rate.

You must present your documents to the registrar 10 minutes prior to your wedding ceremony. However, you are advised to arrive 30 minutes (and not later than 5 minutes!) prior to your wedding appointment time, to ensure there is sufficient time to check over your documentation prior to your ceremony commencing.

The Look and Feel of Getting Married in Aabenraa

Aabenraa’s town hall is a stunning old building, built between 1828-1830.

Inside the wedding room you will immediately notice all the gorgeous old paintings hanging on the walls – these are the Oldenburg Royal line, with associated queens, from Christian I to Frederik VI. They are incredibly striking and give the wedding room a very historic feel.

The wedding room is a very good size, and can seat between 20-25 guests, but can accommodate up to 50 standing!

So it is a great choice if you plan on bringing your family and friends with you.

That being said, the room manages to maintain a very special and intimate feel for those couples who wish to come alone.

The Aabenraa wedding staff are all incredibly kind, warm and friendly. They are very excited and happy that you chose Aabenraa as your wedding choice and want you to have a really happy and memorable wedding day.

1. Take a walk around Aabenraa’s marina 📍

The marina at Aabenraa is a busy hub of the local area. There are many yacht and sailing clubs here, a restaurant, it’s close to the shops and it is only a short walk from the town centre. There is also a beach, so if you’re lucky enough to be in Aabenraa on a sunny day, you can spend some time down on the sand and dipping your toes in the water too!

4. Visit Brundlund Castle 📍

Brundlund Castle is Denmark’s smallest castle but that doesn’t mean it’s the least interesting. On the contrary in fact. Brundlund castle hosts a wide variety of art collections – all created by local artists from the South Jutland area.
