The 5th May is Denmark’s official ‘Liberation Day’ but it was the 4th May when Denmark was liberated from Germany at the end of the 2nd World War. Thousands of Danes took to the streets in celebration and as a symbol of the end of periods of blackouts and a new start of freedom, placed candles in their windows. Koldinghus holds a special remembrance of this celebration by lighting up its many windows on 4th May. You may also notice many candles or lights in the windows of Danish houses too.
