Interview with Martina Lanotte

Describe your wedding photography style in less than 10 words.

Documentary wedding photography.

How did you get into wedding photography?

I’ve always been passionate about photography, but the wedding industry happened only by accident: as a student I was looking for a weekend job and I was immediately hired as assistant by a local wedding photographer. I still remember my first day: we began at 6AM at the bride’s location and went on and on until 3AM. It was very intense and very demanding, but I loved every minute of it.

What inspires you as a wedding photographer?

I think that, as a wedding photographer, it’s my responsibility to capture the memories of the day. When memory starts to fade, years or decades from now, wedding photos are all that will be left of our wedding day. It is so important to remember things like how we felt walking down the aisle, or what that speech meant for us, or even the people that aren’t going to be in our life any longer.

What are you favourite types of places to shoot pictures of a couple?

When it comes to Copenhagen, I think that the best location ever is the old town: I personally find streets, squares, canals to be gorgeous and charming. The perfect backdrop for timeless photos.

Which is your favourite picture of yourself and who took it?

OMG, I’m terrible at having my photos taken. No matter how old I am, I always feel super awkward! So I guess it’s only normal that my fav photo is one that I took myself. It’s the one that you can currently see on my about page om my website. Why do I like it? Cause I look peaceful and complete.

What tricks do you use to help nervous couples relax for their pictures?

I don’t really have special “tricks”, but I like to establish a deep connection with the people I’m working with. I talk a lot and I ask lots of questions (I’m very curious and I love to meet new people all the time). I feel like couples need to trust me in order to relax and let go.

What do you feel are the key things that make the perfect wedding portrait?

Communication, empathy and good natural light.

What is your dream location for a wedding shoot?

I’d love to shoot in an olive tree field in Southern Europe, at sunset..

What do you like to do when you’re not working on photography?

Cooking is my main hobby, especially since the pandemic started, when I had the time to learn new skills, like baking and pasta making. I was calling grandma every week with questions like “grandma, how do you make focaccia?”. Can’t even begin to tell you how happy my girlfriend is.

What is the most important advice you would give to your younger self just starting out it photography?

Believe in yourself and learn as much as you can, from anybody.
