There are no restrictions based on who you are or who you love. And as a foreign couple, you have exactly the same right to marry in Denmark as anyone else. And it\u2019s no accident that this country has become a destination for LGBTQ+ people from all over the world.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly a century ago, as the Nazi rise to power brought the persecution and murder of queer people across Europe, Denmark moved in the opposite direction: in 1933, it became <\/span><b>one of the first countries in the world to decriminalise sex between men<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same happened in 1989, at the height of the HIV\/AIDS crisis, when queer communities worldwide were facing grief, loss, but also active stigma, political abandonment, and violence. That year Denmark became <\/span><b>the first country on earth to legally recognise same-sex partnerships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the very day the law came into effect, Axel and Eigil Axgil, partners for decades and founders of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lgbt.dk\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBT Danmark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, became the first same-sex couple in the world to register a partnership, at Copenhagen City Hall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2012, that recognition became <\/span><b>full marriage equality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriage<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 granted queer couples equal rights, and also allowed them to marry in the Evangelical-Lutheran Church on equal terms with heterosexual couples, a detail that matters to many.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also one important detail that matters in a very practical way for trans and non-binary couples getting married: <\/span><b>Denmark does not require a birth certificate to marry.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In many countries, a birth certificate is a required document, and for trans and non-binary people, that often means deadnames, mismatched markers, and the painful experience of having your identity erased on one of the most important days of your life.
