Was ist los auf Ærø?

Beautiful Ærø island is known for its tranquility and peacefulness, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t much going on there. The islanders are proud of their traditions and events so find out if anything is taking place during your time here!

When: Saturday 23rd December

This lovely parade sees horse riders, a stagecoach and lots of little ‘pixies’ as they walk through the streets. The parade culminates by the Brugsen supermarket as Father Christmas will be handing out gifts for all the children while the parents and adults celebrate with a mulled wine!

JANUARY 2024

What: Masquerade for Epiphany

Where: Søby & Bregninge

When: 5th – 7th January 2024

This is a very sweet and wonderful tradition in Bregninge and Søby on Ærø, where the locals dress up in masks making themselves unrecognisable to their neighbours.

They will then walk the streets after the sun has gone down when they will knock on the doors of houses in the local area. They will be invited in for a drink where they will speak with their hosts in silly voices to disguise who they really are. The intention to confuse those they are speaking with, so they cannot be guessed.

So, if you happen to be walking around in these areas on the first weekend in January, don’t be alarmed! You’ve simply stumbled upon the fun and niche celebrations, thoroughly enjoyed by all the locals involved in this lovely tradition.
